Ball Handling
Figure 8 - No Dribble
Video by BreakthroughBBall
Staying low with the chest up and seat down, players pass the ball in a figure-eight pattern between their legs without dribbling it, working both directions. An unhurried way to build the hand-to-hand handoff feel the dribbling version of this move will need later. This drill comes from BreakthroughBBall.
Ball Handling
Ball Wraps - One Leg
Video by BreakthroughBBall
Sitting low with the seat down and eyes up, players wrap the ball around one leg, reversing direction periodically before switching to the other leg. Builds the same wrap-around ball control used in live one-on-one moves, without the pressure of an actual defender. This drill comes from BreakthroughBBall.
Ball Handling
Ball Circles
Video by BreakthroughBBall
The ball is circled around the head (not above it), the waist, and then the ankles, switching direction every five rotations at each level. Sitting low with eyes up the whole time builds body control along with hand quickness. This drill comes from BreakthroughBBall.
Ball Handling
Finger Tips
Video by BreakthroughBBall
Holding the ball in front of the body, players pat it back and forth between their fingertips, gradually lowering and raising it as they get comfortable. Elbows stay locked out throughout to isolate the fingers and wrists. This drill comes from BreakthroughBBall.
Warm-up · Ball Handling
Ball Slaps
Video by BreakthroughBBall
Sitting low in an athletic stance, players slap the top of the ball with alternating hands as fast as they can. A simple warm-up that wakes up the fingertips and nerve endings before any actual dribbling starts. This drill comes from BreakthroughBBall.
Ball Handling
Figure 8 Dribble - 1 Hand
Video by BreakthroughBBall
The same figure-eight dribble, now performed using only one hand for the entire pattern instead of switching hands as the ball crosses front to back. Practice with both the dominant and off hand. This drill comes from BreakthroughBBall.
Ball Handling
Figure 8 Dribble
Video by BreakthroughBBall
The stationary figure-eight now becomes a live dribble around one leg in a figure-eight pattern; losing the ball is expected and fine — players just pick it up and keep going, then reverse direction. This drill comes from BreakthroughBBall.
Ball Handling
Stunt Drivers
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
Partners face off from cones and dribble straight at each other, executing a 'stunt move' — starting with a simple crossover — right before they'd collide, to get around their partner and reach the other side. Once the basic move is comfortable, add harder moves like between-the-legs or behind-the-back. Played as a one-minute race to see how many crossings each pair can complete. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Team Play
Surprise Party
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
An advantage drill built around unpredictable timing: the ball handler places the ball on the back of the defender in front of them, and the moment they lift it off to start dribbling, the possession is live with the offense already a step ahead. Since the offense gets such a big head start, defenders are coached to stay in a low, weight-on-toes ready position so they can explode into the chase as fast as possible. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Team Play
Switch Up
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
Groups of three work a rectangle split at the halfway line: the player in the middle tries to dribble past a defender to reach a teammate waiting at the far end; once they cross midway, they pass, then immediately become the defender guarding the next pass back the other way. Since roles flip every single rep, it trains the instant transition from offense to defense that live basketball demands. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Team Play
Tic Tac Toe
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
A small-sided scrimmage layered on top of an actual tic-tac-toe board made of cones off to the side: every time a team scores, one of their players has to sprint over and place a marker in a square before returning to play. Forces players to think about two games at once — basketball and strategic square selection — while still communicating and playing solid team defense in between trips to the board. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Conditioning
Staying Power
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
A continuous full-court, small-sided scrimmage rotation with at least three teams: the team at half court challenges whichever team is waiting at either end, and whoever wins a possession — offense by scoring, defense by getting a stop or rebound — immediately pushes the ball to the opposite end to challenge the next team. Keeps players moving constantly between offense, defense, and transition for the full round, with the most total points at the end declared the winner. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Ball Handling
Alley Hoops
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
Two connected obstacle-course alleys test dribbling and defense at once: in the first alley (baseline to half court), the ball handler just has to get past the defender without getting turned around; in the second (half court to three-point line), they try to actually score on the defender. Pairs cycle through both alleys, switching roles each time through. Defenders are taught to stay within arm's reach and push the dribbler toward the edges rather than letting them go straight down the middle. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Team Play
Perfect Possession
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
A shot-clock drill built entirely around defensive discipline: with a 30-second shot clock running, the defense's only goal is to force the clock to zero without allowing a score or an offensive rebound — any make or offensive board resets the clock and restarts the possession. Reinforces that a 'stop' isn't complete until the ball actually changes hands. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Passing
The Weave
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
A full-court passing braid: three lines at the baseline weave the ball back and forth (pass right, run behind, pass left, run behind) with no dribbling allowed, finishing in a layup at the far end before the rebounder restarts the weave going back. Set a target number of full-court weaves and time how fast the group can complete it. Since the ball can never touch the floor and the rebound must be secured before it bounces, it doubles as a passing-and-catching precision drill under pace. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Footwork
Criss Cross
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
A closeout and help-defense drill: one team lines up on the baseline, the other across from them at the three-point line. Each baseline player passes to a teammate, then sprints to close out on a player diagonally or directly across from them, working the closeout footwork (accelerate, chop the feet, get low, one hand up on the shooter, one hand down on the dribble) before the ball reaches the far side and the possession goes live. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Passing
Circle Passing
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
Players spread around the perimeter of a marked rectangle while one player starts under the basket; that player passes to the nearest teammate, who passes it straight back, then rotates to the next closest teammate and repeats until everyone around the perimeter has touched the ball, before pivoting for a layup. Score as many full cycles as possible in 30 seconds, watching that the rush to score doesn't break down proper two-handed passing form. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Passing
Dean Smith
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
A small-sided scrimmage where every basket must come directly off an assist — the shooter has to point to whoever passed them the ball and call out 'nice pass' to make it count. Named for the coaching legend known for building around ball movement, it discourages players from hunting their own shot and reinforces that an assisted look is usually a more open one. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Rebounding
On the Board
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
A pure rebounding drill: offense lines up at both elbows, defense at both baseline cones, and every possession is decided purely by who secures the rebound after a live shot attempt — the defense scores for a defensive board, the offense scores for a make or an offensive board. Reinforces boxing out (hips bent, feet wide, arms out) as a skill in its own right, separate from actually taking the shot. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Rebounding
Rebound Relay
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
Two lines race for loose-ball rebounds: the coach intentionally misses a shot from the free-throw line, and the first player from each line under the basket battles for the board, puts it back up, and scores to win the point for their team. Cycle every player through both lines before tallying the winner. Isolates boxing-out fundamentals but adds a competitive, live-ball scramble element. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Shooting · Passing
Full-Court Shooting
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
A full-court weave variation that adds a shooting wrinkle: after the initial weave finishes in a layup at the far end, the two players who didn't shoot receive a pass and each take an elbow jumper as a brand new weave begins in the other direction. Time how long it takes to complete a full lap of the court and challenge the group to beat their previous time — combining the weave's passing precision with catch-and-shoot reps under fatigue. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Team Play
Champions & Challengers
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
A small-sided, defense-first scrimmage rotation with at least three teams: the team that gets a defensive stop stays on to guard the next team, while the team that scores stays on but switches to defense. Flips the usual incentive structure so that stopping the ball, not just scoring, is what earns a team more court time. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Team Play
Buzzer Beater
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
An end-of-game scenario drill: set up a specific situation (e.g., 10 seconds left, offense down one) and let each team either run a coach-drawn play or call their own, then count down loudly as the possession plays out live. Reinforces that a game-winning 'buzzer beater' can just as easily be a defensive stop as a made shot, and gives players reps making decisions under a visible, shrinking clock. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
Shooting
Minute to Win It
Video by MOJO (yougotmojo)
Two teams line up at equally-spaced shooting spots and race against a one-minute clock and a target make count (e.g., 10). Players cycle through shoot-rebound-pass to the next teammate as fast as they can; the team that hits the target first, or is closest when time expires, wins. Since the clock tempts players to rush, keep reminding them that quick shots still need balanced feet, a tucked elbow, and eyes on the rim. This drill comes from MOJO (yougotmojo).
